The history of the doodle
Big hearts.
Curly coats.
Quite a story.
From the Poodle’s working roots to a guide-dog experiment that helped spark a worldwide fascination. Meet the story behind the dogs we love.
Before the doodle became a household name
It starts with
the Poodle.
Behind the famous curls is a working dog. Poodles have a long history as water retrievers, with the intelligence and athleticism to match.
Crossing a Poodle with another breed brings together two family histories. It does not create a predictable formula: coat, size, energy, and personality can vary from one dog to the next.
The story, in chapters
From working roots
to family life.
The best-known Labradoodle story is a turning point in doodle history—not the beginning of all Poodle crossbreeding.
A retriever beneath the curls
The Poodle’s background includes retrieving from water. That working heritage helps explain why there is much more to these dogs than a distinctive haircut.
Poodle crosses were already here
The broader story includes earlier Poodle mixes, such as Cockapoos. “Doodle” is a popular umbrella term; it is not a single breed with one shared founding date.
A practical goal. An unexpected legacy.
Working with Guide Dogs Victoria in Australia, Wally Conron bred a Labrador–Poodle litter in an effort to provide a guide dog for a woman in Hawaii whose husband had allergies. A puppy named Sultan went on to become her guide dog.
The project became a defining chapter in the Labradoodle’s public story. Its original purpose was assistance work—not a promise that every Poodle mix would be allergy-safe.
A growing family of familiar names
Labradoodles and Goldendoodles became widely familiar, alongside a growing variety of Poodle crosses. The names describe ancestry, but they cannot tell you everything about the dog in front of you.
Affection, enthusiasm—and responsibility
Doodle popularity has brought more attention to breeding practices, realistic expectations, grooming, and lifelong care. The next chapter depends on thoughtful choices that put dogs first.
The purpose behind the popularity
A guide dog helped
change the conversation.
Sultan’s story is a reminder that the Labradoodle’s best-known origin was about helping one person. The later popularity of doodles reached far beyond that original brief.
It is not a guarantee about every dog with the same mix.
Separate fact from fluff
Love the curls.
Know the whole picture.
Low shedding isn’t allergy-free.
No dog is completely hypoallergenic. Allergens are not limited to shed hair, and a curly coat is not an allergy guarantee.
Fluffy doesn’t mean effortless.
Make coat care part of everyday planning. Your dog’s coat and lifestyle should guide the routine you build with a groomer.
A mix isn’t a health guarantee.
A 2024 Royal Veterinary College study found that the overall health of the Cockapoos, Labradoodles, and Cavapoos studied was largely similar to that of their parent breeds.

Modern dog photography illustrates this guide; these are not archival photographs of Sultan or the original breeding program.
A name is only the beginning
One shared ancestor.
So many individuals.
A Labradoodle has Labrador Retriever and Poodle ancestry. A Goldendoodle combines Golden Retriever and Poodle ancestry. Other crosses have their own family trees.
Knowing the mix is a starting point. Getting to know the individual dog’s needs, behavior, and background is what helps you build a good life together.
A little more context
The questions behind the story.
Did Wally Conron invent every kind of doodle?
No. His guide-dog breeding project is central to the modern Labradoodle story, but Poodle crossbreeding has a broader history. It would be misleading to give every Poodle mix the same origin story.
Is “doodle” one breed?
No. It is a widely used name for a range of Poodle crosses. Different mixes—and different dogs within a mix—can have very different characteristics.
Does a doodle automatically make a good service dog?
No. Suitability depends on the individual dog’s temperament, health, abilities, and specialized training. Sultan’s story does not make every Labradoodle or Poodle mix a service-dog candidate.
What should this history mean for a future owner?
Enjoy the story, but choose with care. Ask about the individual dog, review available records, understand everyday care, and consider whether your routine meets that dog’s needs.
